In 1911, Robert Bindschedler bought an old mill located in Massilly (south of Burgundy) that used to belong to the prestigious abbey of Cluny. He installed there a whole set of turbines and used to collect tin with the powered electricity from scrap through electrolysis.
After World War I, Massilly started the business of tinplate processing to make domestic ustensils.

In 1952, the Robert Bindschedler SA company, a printer for the trade and tinplate dealer, was set up. RB SA would become later a modern service centre dedicated to cutting and printing tinplate and aluminium.
Massilly, that already specialized in caps production (Eurocap, twist caps…) decided to extend this industry to respond to the ever increasing demand of cans in glass jars.
In 1962, Pierre Bindschedler (founder’s son) signed up an agreement with the American group Anchor-Hocking for the production of “Twist” caps and for providing sealing equipment. These “Illico” then “Euro-Twist” brand caps produced at the beginning in a few tens of millions of units have experienced a steady progression. The Massilly group commercializes on average 2.5 billion caps today.

In 1976, canmaking evolved radically. From the start Massilly opted for two new techniques: electrical welding and re-drawing process. The Massilly group produces today over 600 millions cans in 4 plants spread out in France and Spain.

Over the 80s the group has progressively set up business in the UK, in Spain, in Switzerland and Italy. More recently the group has established business in Canada, Ghana and South Africa.
In France, Massilly has extended business in crafts close to the basic activity with the takeover of Franpac, a leading company in metal packaging for fish, building up a machinery and tooling hub for internal and customers’ needs (Massiservices) and integrating international wholesalers and distributors.

Today the group has a turnover exceeding 200m euro, employs over 1000 people in more than 20 companies exclusively in the metal packaging industry.
